Top tips to nail that job interview

It’s the big day! You’re at the interview for what could potentially be your new job for many years to come. The job sounds perfect, the company seems great, but how do you get them to feel the same way about you? Here are our top tips to make sure you smash that job interview.

Be prepared

You should have researched the company and role before applying for the job, but at an interview you need to have a good understanding of what the company does and why you’re a perfect fit for the role.

Show them that you’re excited about the company’s work and eager to contribute.

Understand the company ethos

Read reviews, look at their website, speak to anyone you may know that worked there previously and analyse their communication with you so far.

There should always be an assumed level of professionalism at an interview, but there are varying levels of formality. If you find yourself struggling to adapt to their culture, perhaps you should reconsider whether the job is right for you.

Dress appropriately

There’s an element of common sense here; don’t show up to a job interview looking like you just crawled out of bed. It’s not a fashion show, but you should be smart and well-presented.

Plan your way there ahead of time

Make sure you know the route and leave plenty of time to get there. Job interviews can be stressful experiences; the last thing you want to do is exacerbate that stress by running late. If you arrive early you can always find a nearby coffee shop – what’s going to prepare you better than a coffee and your favourite pastry!?

Be yourself

Make sure you sell yourself, but equally, don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. It’s okay to not know all the answers but faking knowledge or experience will only cause trouble down the line for both you and your employer.

Remember, you’re interviewing them too

An interview is a two-way process. You should be deciding whether this company is right for you as much as they’re deciding whether you’re right for them. Come prepared with plenty of questions to make sure you’ve got all the information you need. Accepting a new job is a big deal!

Be friendly

There’s only one type of company where being friendly will go down badly – a company you don’t want to work for! (Unless you’re a right misery guts).
